Legato, 2014

Tales of Two Cities
Moscow Museum of Modern Art on Gogolevsky Boulevard, Moscow, September 16 – October 5, 2014
Museum Judenplatz, Vienna, January 21 – April 19, 2015

In her installation Legato the artist refers to three small pieces of embroidery that were produced in the special-regime labor camp in Inta by a female inmate in the late 1940s or early 1950s. To reflect the thoughts of an unknown person, Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair uses the strategy of appropriation. She enlarges the motifs and repeats them until she internalizes them. Beyond the imaginary reminiscence, Shapiro-Obermair discovers artistic qualities and a homage to Modernism.
